| Most visitors to Vietnam are overwhelmed by the sublime beauty of the country's natural setting: the Red River Delta in the north, the Mekong Delta in the south and almost the entire coastal strip are a patchwork of brilliant green rice paddies tended by women in conical hats. There are some divine beaches along the coast, while inland there are soaring mountains, some of which are cloaked by dense, misty forests. Vietnam also offers an opportunity to see a country of traditional charm and rare beauty rapidly opening up to the outside world.

Cycling in the Northwest highlands of Mai Chau is a great way to see this fascinating and visually stunning part of Vietnam, offering both physical activity and the unique opportunity to observe a way of life that has changed little over the centuries. As we cycle, we encounter Muong and White Thai inhabitants and are guests in their traditional stilt houses allowing us to observe how these minority peoples live. Our modern lightweight European bikes make exploring this part of the country an enjoyable and relatively easy experience and there is a support vehicle on hand if necessary.

Also commonly referred to as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is a bustling, dynamic and industrial centre, the largest city in the country, the economic capital and the cultural trendsetter. Yet within the teeming metropolis are the timeless traditions and beauty of an ancient culture. Old French colonial buildings exist side by side with narrow alleys bustling with new entrepreneurial spirits. An excursion to Cu Chi Tunnel also gives one introduction to the rough encounter the country had with the Americans…
